We’re proud to have empowered Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital to prepare for the launch of e-observations – a vital initiative to improve patient interactions, reduce deviations in care and enhance efficiency.
“It will make such a difference in the way we can respond to our patients. We will be able to see all of the observations for our patients in one go. As a nurse in charge you can see who your sickest patients are, and you know where your priorities are.”
The NHS is facing a number of challenges, such as the need to provide better patient care with sometimes limited budgets, or to provide a great experience for the staff that are working within the NHS. Many Trusts are looking to technology as a solution – automating, streamlining and enhancing the ways in which they are working.
Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital is a 1,200-bed teaching hospital with state-of-the-art facilities for modern patient care. They work closely with the University of East Anglia’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences to train health professionals and undertake clinical research.

The Challenge
The Trust purchased a number of iOS devices, in excess of 3,000 units, with the objective that they be deployed and managed as efficiently as possible. The devices were being brought onboard to primarily support the launch of e-observations – a key piece of software which enables clinicians to take patient observations electronically, removing the need for paper charts altogether.
With the devices due to be circulated in the coming months a solution was required that could centrally manage them at scale, whilst supporting a number of relationship-based scenarios.
The Solution
As a Microsoft-first organisation, Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital looked towards Intune as the key tool to support their mobile device ecosystem.
Leveraging our status as an Enterprise Mobility + Security Elite Partner, we were able to mobilise quickly to validate this in readiness, ensuring that the solution would deliver against the Trust’s core objectives in terms of deployment, provisioning, policy management, application delivery and updates.
It was also important to establish that Intune would align to the Trust’s device management roadmap to deliver long-term value.
What does the Trust think?
“It will be a much more patient-friendly way of working. Because you haven't got your hands full of paperwork, you'll be able to focus more on your patients.”
The electronic observation (e-obs) system will revolutionise the way patient observations – such as temperature, blood pressure and heart rate – are taken, recorded and used.
For the first time, staff across the Trust will be able to record patient observations electronically, which are then fed into a central system so that they are always updated and available for the care professionals looking after the patient.
The system will bring huge benefits to patients, both in terms of the availability and accuracy of their information, and enhancing efficiencies for staff to meet their care needs.
